History as Obama elected America's first black president

Americans elected Democrat Barack Obama as their first black president, in a transformational election which will reshape US politics and reposition the United States on the world stage.

Obama, 47, will be inaugurated the 44th US president on January 20, 2009, and inherit an economy mired in the worst financial crisis since the 1930s, two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and a nuclear showdown with Iran.

Television networks projected his victory over Republican John McCain after Senator Obama solidified traditional Democratic states and cut deep into the Republican territory which his rival needed to control to win the White House.

Obama's historic inauguration will complete a stunning ascent to the pinnacle of US and global politics from national obscurity just four years ago and close an eight year era of turbulence under President George W. Bush.

He will take office with Democrats holding a monopoly in power in Washington, after an epochal election which sparked a rare generational and political realignment and finally snuffed out an era of Republican control.

Obama is promising to renew bruised ties with US allies, and to engage some of the most fierce US foes like Iran and North Korea. He has vowed to pass tackle climate change and provide health care to all Americans.

His presidency also marks a stunning cultural shift, with Obama, the son of Kenyan father and white mother from Kansas, the first African American president of a nation still riven by racial divides.

When he launched his campaign on a chilly day in Illinois in February 2007, Obama forged a mantra of change which powered him throughout the longest, most costly US presidential campaign in history.

With a stunning grassroots political movement, powered by massive multi-million dollar fundraising, Obama first beat Hillary Clinton, and the Democratic Party's then preeminent political machine.

Obama strode towards victory on Tuesday by capturing the states of Pennsylvania, the key battleground which McCain needed to win to keep his long-shot hopes of victory alive.
In a sweet moment for Democrats, he also seized the midwestern battleground of Ohio and captured New Mexico and Iowa, two states won by Bush in 2004 to close out McCain's possible route towards the White House.

Obama had led national and battleground polls and had capitalized on the fear of Americans pitched into the deep financial crisis, especially as he appeared to be presidential in a string of debates.

McCain had argued that Obama was too inexperienced to be US commander in chief and would pursue "socialist" redistribution policies that would leave the economy mired in recession.

McCain, 72, an Arizona senator, would have been the oldest man ever inaugurated for a first term in the White House.

FEDEX Commercial

This one gave me a good laugh....

Hi Again

I've been quiet for some time now... I just have an urge to log in and write 'rubbish' today. It's Deepavali and another Public Holiday for staying home for tv and psp gaming. I'm playing 'the tales of eternia' now and it's addicting, but i kinda cheated with walkthru' guide....hehe... My hubby also playing the same game at the moment but he's much faster than I cos he alrd collected 3 craymels and I only with 2 now. But I will chase him down....slowly....

Time flies...and the coming to the end of 2008 and it's BIG 30 for me! I never thought that I'll reach this number so fast. Well...and then i woke up and it's 30 years past...scary...

I'm into romance book also at the moment. Especially those by Nora Roberts, not all but there's few that really intrigued me well enough that i can't put it down once i started. Nice...

Everyone is talking about iPhone now but i didn't get one. Instead i got samsung f480. Anyway mobile's technology is really hard to keep up with unless you got the $$$ and geek on it. But i got iTouch too. It's wifi that attracts me with f480 doesn't come with it. Hubby's Omnia is cool but not my cup of tea cos it's a little too complicated for me...keep in mind i'm not a techno geek here...We really spend quite a lot this month but it's worth it...i think??!!

Oh...and I had a wonderful 6th anniversary with hubby recently...;o) We had nice and cosy meal with cocktail to top it off...I really hope there's many more years to come.

Sad News

It’s been long time...many things happened; including miscarried and process of healing, physically and emotionally. It’s really a tough period for me and my hubby. We were thrilled when I just got pregnant and planned to announce it after my first trimester but sadly it didn’t went the way we wanted. I really don’t have any words to describe my feelings...I felt bad for my hubby as I put so much pressure on him during these period but at the same time thankful cos he’s the one that is there for me all the time and given me the support and reason to live again. I’m trying to live my life but things will never be the same again...

Shutdown Day

Early last year, a computer programmer in Canada realised that he was spending way too much time in front of computers, and decided to spend one day with his family, away from computers.

So, he and a few friends issued a challenge on the Internet, asking people to stay away from the computer for 24 hours. 65,000 people from all over the globe responded to the challenge and shut down their computers on March 24 last year, creating the first Shutdown Day.

The second Shutdown Day is tomorrow, May 3, 2008. As of yesterday afternoon, 11,614 people have pledged to go without computers for a day on the event’s website.

A psychologist has warned that modern people are so “connected” these days, many run the risks of cyber addiction.

One of the reporters from My Paper tried to stay “unplugged” for a day, even switching off her gadgets and cell phone. She also tried to stay away from television for the day. She found the going tough – lapsing into her old routine a couple of times before catching herself – but not as unbearable as she initially thought.

Have you taken up the challenge?

It's Friday Breakfast Meeting

TGIF!!! We had a breakfast meeting today and the breakfast is not half bad. Check out the portion...

The better part is the toast is REALLY yummy!!! I'm not a fan of bread but this one here is absolutely GOOD! I think it's multigrain bread and they toasted it to crisp. Even without the butter and jam, it's taste fine. Another thing is the ambience is pretty facinating. Check out the centre ceiling, it's an art...

Anyway, we had a great meeting and looking forward for more to come in a fairly comfortable environment like this one. We all kinda bored of the four-wall conference room. Let's get creative and hear some more interesting suggestion soon!

12 Get-You-off-the-Couch Reasons to Exercise

If there's one magic bullet to being healthy, happy, and wise, it's exercise. So the next time you think, I'll work out tomorrow, check this list of research-proven facts to remind yourself why you want to get moving today.

  1. Physical activity helps you lose weight by burning calories, boosting resting metabolism, and buffering you from bone and muscle loss that can result if you diet alone.

  2. High levels of physical activity can decrease your risk of colon cancer by 40 to 50 percent.

  3. Exercise helps you get better sleep. In one study, people who walked more than six blocks a day had one-third fewer insomnia problems than their less active cohorts.

  4. Walking 30 minutes five days a week can increase your life span by one and a half years. Make that running, and it may add up to four years. That's the conclusion of a 2005 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, which showed that it's never too late to increase longevity.

  5. Half-hour aerobic sessions three to five times a week have shown to cut symptoms of mild to moderate depression nearly in half. One study suggests that exercise can be as effective as drugs in treating major depressive disorder.

  6. Brisk walking for just an hour or two a week can reduce the rick of breast cancer in postmenopausal women by nearly 20 percent. And for those who already have the disease, walking three to five hours a week may reduce the chance of dying from it by as much as 50 percent.

  7. Aerobic exercise, such as a half hour of rapid walking five days a week, has been shown to cut the risk of catching a cold nearly half in postmenopausal women.

  8. People who work out have more energy than nonexercisers, according to researchers at the University of Georgia, based on review of 70 studies. That boost, on average, beats the effect of stimulant drugs.

  9. Working out - resistance training in particular - helps maintain, and even modestly increase, bone density to reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

  10. An active lifestyle halves the risk of developing heart disease. Walking up to 12 miles a week (translation: 30 to 50 minutes a day) significantly improves heart health, according to a Duke University study. And if you're at high risk for diabetes, working out only about 20 minutes a day, combined with a low-fat diet, can reduce the chance of developing the disease by 58 percent.

  11. Just working out 15 minutes three days a week may reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease by 30 to 40 percent, according to a study in 2006 in the Annals of Internal Medicine. For healthy older adults, a six-month program of exercise can reverse the age-related loss of brain tissue that begins around age 40 by two to three years, especially in regions responsible for memory and higher cognition.

  12. Working out improves your sex life - by not only enhancing self-esteem but also strenghtening the cardiovascular system.

So what are you waiting for? Start you exercise regime now!

What Colour Is Your Mood Today?

Why do we say we're "see red" when we're angry, or associate bright yellow to vibrance and youth? Does green really have a calming effect on us?

Whether we know it or not, colour has a profound effect on our moods. For example, if you have a high-profile meeting at the office, you may find yourself opting for a black "power" suit. Women also tend to feel racy and sexy in red lingerie, while pink brings out our feminine and cutesy side.

THE PINK PERSONALITY

The pink personality is tender, giving and vulnerable. If pink is your favourite colour, you are most likely to be talented, charming and warm. You also have drive but it's not an overly-aggressive ambitious streak. You are most likely to be a 'candles on the table' kind of incurable romantic.

THE TURQUOISE PERSONALITY

Turquoise is the coulour of relationships and humanitarianism. If you love turquoise, you're likely to be sociable, personal, emotional and ambitious. You like the uncluttered, purity of mind it leaves you with and makes you wish you could feel like that all the time. You're also likely to be single-minded and individualistic, and a great friend and lover of family life and animals.

THE ORANGE PERSONALITY

The orange personality is a lover of freedom. So if orange is your favourite colour, you'd most likely have the ability to extend or break down barriers. This colour seems to draw those who are thoughtful, considerate and possess self-control, which could be why sportsmen respond to the colour positively. If your friend loves this colour, you'll find he or she is usually the perfect friend!

THE BLUE PERSONALITY

Blue signifies peace with a purpose. The blue personality values honour and sincerity above anything else. People who love blue like to express themselves, and always advise caution to think before they leap. "Still waters run deep" is true of the blue personality! Those who love blue can be vulnerable too - they have a high sense of responsibility and so must be careful of perfectionist tendencies.

THE RED PERSONALITY

The red personality is that of the pioneer and the go-getter. Red is the colour of passion and power, so if you love red, you're more than likely to have a strong sex drive, love travelling and be creative! Those drawn to red often have an interest in the mystical. You also have a zest for life and like to stay on top of things.

THE YELLOW PERSONALITY

People drawn to yellow are self-confident personalities who will challenge anything: Authority, rules, long-established ways of thinking and so on! Adept at multi-tasking, yellow lovers are interested in theories, abstractions, innovations and change. Yellow lovers are a conceptual deep thinkers who enjoy getting "lost in their heads". Their interest in exploring new ideas often lead to innovative ways to make a difference.

THE GREEN PERSONALITY

A person who loves this colour lives in a world of intangibles where hopes, dreams and emotions are most important. They tend to look at the big picture, are not detail-oriented, and like to explore possibilities and alternative ways of doing things. You have a rich vivid imagination and thrive in an atmosphere that encourages the use of your creative abilities and talent. It is said that those who love green have a highly developed intuition and seem to be able to sense what others are feeling.

So what is your favourite colour, and what does it say about how you're feeling and behaving today?

The Forbidden Kingdom

I went to see the movie today and it's 'Okay' for me. I read some reviews few days ago and it's not the movie they consider GOOD movie. I go to watch it anyway and it's not as bad, it's just kinda funny cos' even Jade Emporer speaks English. Sun Wu Kong and Drunken Master also speak English. And the funny part is all these Chinese character have an accent when they speak English. And a lot of things that they said are direct translation from Chinese and some really sound weird. Other than that it's all action and imagination. Logic doesn't work here.

I do agree with one of the review that the movie was made to suits the appetite of Ang Mohs. When the kid somehow got thru the 'Gate of No Gate' to a place where no one speak English and suddenly after Jackie Chan appears, everyone started to speak English! Even old monks from temple too! The story is all fiction and for me it's always fun to watch Jackie Chan and Jet Li bcos' I loved their previous movies. Even though the story line is not as strong as expected, it's still feel good for me to watch JC and JL on big screen. It doesn't even matter if they're not sharing the same screen.

After all, I'm a movie fanatic! Enjoy the show and have a good laugh even if doesn't live up to the expectation. Life is too short to complain, live it to the fullest! Cheerios!!!

Clorets New Advertisement

This advertisement is kinda funny and 'err...' at the same time...hehe...and a couple of days ago me and my hubby thought that we want to try it ourselves to see if its really that 'nice', so we went to NTUC. And to our surprise it's TEMPORARY OUT OF STOCK!!! I guess all the guys must be trying their luck on it....haha...

EARTH DAY

Today is EARTH DAY! And I bet a lot of people didn't even know there's such a day named Earth Day. All it takes is just a powerful and influential man (Al Gore) to raise awareness among us to start paying attention to our earth. I never knew the earth is in any danger until a documentary 'Planet Earth' was aired with an episode that strucked me so much that I started to pay attention. The show was about polar bears in search for land of ice. It is so heart-breaking when you see those bears and cubs swim their way for days to search for land. Lots had died and those able to make it barely alive. And this is all happening because of Global Warming that causes the ice melted away. Even small islands are facing the fate of sinking into the sea due to the rise of sea level as the result of global warming. However, the good news is more and more people are aware and taking steps in saving our mother nature from further destruction.

I bought some books from a bookstore just the other day and they put it in paper bag instead of plastic bag. And what interesting about these paper bags are it's drawed by some Primary 5 students from selected schools across Sg. It's relieving that schools are educating our children to be aware of going green and do their parts in encouraging people to ditch the plastic for recyclable paper.

Even more interesting is this morning when I started use google search, the logo is totally awesome!

I guess no one is forgetting about our mother nature after all! Let us work together to keep our earth a better place for our children. Wait no more, the time is now!

Relaxing Weekend

My doggie's 1st birthday is coming soon so me and my hubby went to US Doggie Bakery to order a muffy cake for her. We bought some cookies for her too! Time has really changed. I had dogs when I was young too but we gave them remains of our food or bones, but now you have a wide variety of dog kibbles and even cookies and cakes! You'll be surprised to see the wide choices available at USDB such as pies, meatloaves, and even paus for dog!

We then head for shopping mall and after few rounds of walking we had a rest at Dome. It's quite strategically located inside Borders. You can have a place to rest and at the same time enjoy a cuppa or a sip of tea with choices of finger food and cakes. I had a cafe latte (which is my all time favourite) with Fruit Forest Cheese Cake. Yum yum...

A simple life is a happy life!

Pet Therapy

I read a magazine recently which quoted, "Couples should treat each other the way most humans treat their pet dog if they want the quality of their relationship to improve." You might find it ridiculous but here are few things that you probably will nod your head on after reading it:

Let him run free

For one thing, just as you wouldn't keep your dog in a cage all day, don't keep your mate on a short lease. Yet, too many people try to cage their partners and don't give them any leeway. Spouses need to have their own friends and hobbies and time to themselves without their mate around all the time.

Tell him, "Good Boy!"

When a pet dog is good, most owners reward it immediately. And that's what any considerate partner should do with their loved one. For instance, the minute he or she gives you a compliment, say "I appreciate it". The key is the immediacy of the reward. If you wait too long, they'll forget what they did - or no longer care about it. Either way, they're not likely to repeat the good behaviour again, which is why you are rewarding them.

Let him make a mess

A dog is happiest when it's allowed to romp around freely. Likewise, you should let your mate do the same: mess the place up a bit without jumping down his throat for being untidy. Sometimes, it's more important to give your mate, like your dog, the comfort they want rather than having immaculately clean furniture or a perfectly organised work area or garage.

Show him love

Most pet dogs have a favourite place they like to be touched or stroked; maybe behind the ears, under the chin or on the belly. If you haven't already done so, then you should learn where and how your mate likes to be touched. Touching each other helps keep the romance in your marriage. And, just like your pet, your partner will have favourite spots or ways tot be touched - a hug, a quick kiss on the cheek or an arm around the waist.

Keep him well fed

Finally, always keep him well fed. Feed your husband at the same time each day - but if you can't do that, at least don't keep him waiting. Just as she feeds her dog at the same time each day, a woman should feed her man at the same time each night, so he knows when to expect dinner.

How To Save Your Planet

1. A Mug of Your Own

Every year Americans throw away 25 billion polystyrene cups and 25 billion individual water bottles, most of which end up in landfills. Instead buy a reusable to-go mug and a bottle that you can refill with filtered tap water. Bring your own (to a coffee shop, a meeting), and you cut down on Styrofoam.

2. Eat Ice Cream from a Cone

A cone beats a cup. Why? "You're eating your silverware instead of using plastic," says Matthew Modine, a passionate promoter of earth-friendly policies. "It's all about consuming less, using fewer of the resources needed to make products and packaging."

3. Clean Without Chemicals

Natural cleansers like vinegar and baking soda do a great job without harming the planet. "And," Matthew says, "a little vegetable oil and lemon juice makes a great wood polish."

4. Bag It

Get reusable cloth bags for the grocery store and the dry cleaner. More than 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away every year.

5. Stop Junk Mail

Every year 100 million trees are chopped down for junk mail sent to American homes. Contact the direct marketing association at dmachoice.org/mps to remove your name from mailing lists of their members.

6. A Better TP

Recycled toilet paper is scratchier that three-ply, but it's much softer on the environment. "It's like switching from whole milk to skim," says O writer Aimee Lee Ball. "After a while the beloved original seems over-the-top."

7. Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) use four times less energy than incandescent ones. If every American family substituted five CFL bulbs for incandescent, it would be equivalent to taking eight million cars off the road for a year. Ball says "They cost a little more up front, but they last up to 15 times longer."

8. De-Lint the Dryer

Lint builds up after every dryer cycle, reducing the machine's efficiency. Removing it does a lot to decrease its usually massive energy use.

9. Pick Safe Paints

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, architectural coatings such as paints and varnishes are the second-largest source of fumes from volatile organic compounds, substances that evaporate at room temperature and react in sunlight to form photochemical smog. Look for cans with "No VOC." We'll all breathe easier.

10. Shorten Your Shower

Low-flow showerheads would be a big improvement. "If they're well designed, the pressure should still feel good," says Laurie David, another prominent activist in Hollywood. "For every two minutes you shave off your shower, you save 10 gallons of water."

11. Shut Down Your Computer

The average computer left on all day uses nearly 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year, producing more than a ton of carbon emissions. So turn off your computer anytime you're not on it, and eliminate the screen saver function, which uses more energy than the sleep mode.

Nice and Slow

STOP, just for a moment, to consider the way we live. Everything we do and own is about speed - fast food, fast commute, fast internet access, fast communication, fast solutions, fast results and fast fixes. Most of the First World is in frenzy over doing more in less time, with new technology and gadgets that claim to organise our activity-centred lives and make the chaos manageable, if that's even possible.

So what's wrong with that? Certainly, life is more convenient now than it has ever been. But these days, the average work day is no longer 9 to 5. Instead we rise at the crack of dawn to beat rush hour traffic. We even eat at our desks during lunch and we're chained to our workstations till past 7pm because leaving work for tomorrow isn't an option. We continue this formula - until we realise our diaries are liberally sprinkled with more doctors' appointments that social events.

We need to take a chill pill. Seriously. We've been pulling ahead at full speed for the longest time that it has become normal. In 2007, after the British Council carried out research, it was discovered that Singapore was the fastest moving city in the world. It was based on the calculation of the average time it took for people to walk an 18m stretch. Apparently, we clock in just over 10 seconds - New York City and London, eat our dust.

Then again, slowing things down might be a lot harder than you'd think. You would think that after all these years of research and development to make our lives easier and more efficient, we would have more time to relax. But in shortening the duration of our activities - an SMS instead of a phone call, 10 minutes on the Power Plate instead of an hour's gym session - all we have done is created more time to do ... More things.

All this running around seems to have bred unhealthy levels of stress, related illness, an intolerance for anything or anyone who cannot keep up with our pace. If we're not served our food on time, we kick up a stink and demand to see the manager. We zip pass any elderly person who happens to be tottering ahead of us. Is getting our way really worth the stress? We really need to take stock of what's become of us. Expectations and attitudes need to change. And maybe it should start with me and you.

Just For Sharing

A sharp tongue can cut my own throat.

If I want my dreams to come true, I mustn't oversleep.

Of all the things I wear, my expression is the most important.

The best vitamin for making friends … B1.

The happiness of my life depends on the quality of my thoughts.

The heaviest thing I can carry is a grudge.

One thing I can give and still keep … is my word.

I lie the loudest when I lie to myself.

If I lack the courage to start, I have already finished.

One thing I can't recycle is wasted time.

Ideas won't work unless 'I' do.

My mind is like a parachute … it functions only when open.

The 10 commandments are not a multiple choice.

The pursuit of happiness is the chase of a lifetime.

It is never too late to become what I might have been.

Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

Movie To Go

Finally...the movie me and my hubby are waititng for so long since the movie poster is out is opening on 18 April 08. The casts were all great with big names like Jet Li and Jackie Chan...

We've been missing so many great movies in cinema due to the rising of movie ticket price, however we both decided to go to catch this one in cinema. Let's hope it's worth our $$$!

Irony of Life

People are never satisfied.

Men:

1. All men are extremely busy.
2. Although they are so busy, they still have time for women.
3. Although they have time for women, they don't really care for them.
4. Although they don't really care for them, they always have one around.
5. Although they always have one around them, they always try their luck with others.

Women:

1. The most important thing for a woman is financial security.
2. Although this is so important, they still go out and buy expensive clothes and stuff.
3. Although they always buy expensive clothes, they never have something to wear.
4. Although they never have something to wear, they always dress beautifully.
5. Although they always dress beautifully, their clothes are always just 'an old rag'.
6. Although their clothes are always 'just an old rag', they still expect you to compliment them.
7. Although they expect you to compliment them, when you do, they don't believe you.

Wisdom:

WHEN I WAS MARRIED 25 YEARS, I TOOK A LOOK AT MY WIFE ONE DAY AND SAID, 'HONEY, 25 YEARS AGO WE HAD A CHEAP APARTMENT, A CHEAP CAR, SLEPT ON A SOFA BED AND WATCHED A 10-INCH BLACK AND WHITE TV, BUT I GOT TO SLEEP EVERY NIGHT WITH A HOT 25-YEAR-OLD BLOND.' 'NOW WE HAVE A $500,000.00 HOME, A $45,000.00 CAR, NICE BIG BED AND PLASMA SCREEN TV, BUT I'M SLEEPING WITH A 50-YEAR-OLD WOMAN. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT YOU ARE NOT HOLDING UP YOUR SIDE OF THINGS.' MY WIFE IS A VERY REASONABLE WOMAN. SHE TOLD ME TO GO OUT & FIND A HOT 25-YEAR-OLD BLONDE, AND SHE WOULD MAKE SURE THAT I WOULD ONCE AGAIN BE LIVING IN A CHEAP APARTMENT, DRIVING A CHEAP CAR, SLEEPING ON A SOFA BED AND WATCHING A 10-INCH BLACK AND WHITE TV. AREN'T WOMEN GREAT? THEY REALLY KNOW HOW TO SOLVE YOUR MID-LIFE CRISIS!

Home Alone

Another fine day passed, listening to hubby's snoring from the room and sleeping little doggie in her place at the kitchen, here I am alone at the hall, the only one awake at home. Weather is hot and the fan is on. Only the sounds from the turning fan and traffic from the expressway opposite our house with occasional chirping of flying by birds from outside that can be heard. Oh....and of course the irritating sounds of workers on the rooftop doing their constructing jobs that nearly destroyed our ceiling just days ago.

Hubby is going to work night shift again tonight, so there I am alone again. Watching TV, surfing the net are the only activities I'm doing to spend those lonesome times with hubby at work and doggie at sleep. Things are the same all the time, except we all getting older by the seconds...how depressing is that?

A good book or a good show, and sometimes a small act of love and appreciation from loved ones can lift up our depressing soul. All we need sometimes is just a hug.... Big Hug
